2014 Oscar Nominations List | Full List Of 2014 Academy Awards Nominees
Below are the nominations for the 2014 Oscars, which rewards the films of 2013.
Interesting batch this year. Some personal thoughts on the list:
- So glad Roger Deakins’ cinematography on Prisoners was nominated. Contemporary dramas and thrillers often get overlooked in this category, but his incredible lighting definitely stood out, even on the small screen I watched this great film on.
- No Visual Effects nom for Pacific Rim?!! Robbery, I say. This is probably a snub against a film that wasn’t considered a big hit at the box-office. When it comes to big ‘popcorn’ studio movies, a film often has to be a big hit to be acknowledged by the Academy.
- Nice to see four young newcomers get nominated for their song from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. I wish them the best. Who knows, maybe they’ll be the next U2 some day?
- Jonah Hill again? He doesn’t need any more help after the Moneyball nom.
- Meryl Streep again? Seriously, these “Academy darlings” take up spots that could be filled to recognize lesser-known actors that took on much more challenging roles this year.
- Why is Before Midnight considered an Adapted Screenplay? It must fall under some odd classification, but that still doesn’t mean it makes sense. I loved the film and think it deserves acknowledgment as a wholly original work.
- Her won the original screenplay Golden Globe for Spike Jonze and I’d like to see it win the Oscar. It was the most relevant, and dare I say important, original produced screenplay of the year, at least amongst wide release commercial movies. Spike Jonze, like his contemporaries David O. Russel and Paul Thomas Anderson, is one of the few writers who can pull off a great, layered script without using subtext.
- When will Sally Hawkins truly break through in a big Hollywood movie? She deserves to be a household name. I’ll never forget her as “Poppy” in her breakout film, Happy-Go-Lucky. Maybe this summer’s Godzilla will be her big one? (According to her imdb, she’s in it.) I kind of hope not. She deserves better.
- Still haven’t seen 12 Years a Slave. Still scared to.
- The Best Makeup category now includes “and Hairstyling” and no nomination for American Hustle? As Tina Fey pointed out at the Golden Globes, the working title of the film was “Explosion at the Wig Factory.” That alone should have been a tip-off to the Academy. Okay, maybe that was a joke.
- I can’t say I’ve heard all the scores in the Original Score category, but I remember Steven Price’s score for Gravity totally rocking my world (wocka wocka). I’d love to see him win.
Awards will be handed out at ceremonies at the Dolby Theatre March 2, 2014, telecast live by ABC-TV.
