Emmy nominations 2011

Louis C.K. in FX channel's "Louie"

The Emmy Nominations are in. Major categories listed below; for the full list, see The Hollywood Reporter.

Writing noms are at bottom, highlighted in blue.

There’s some great choices this year. I’m most excited about these noms…

  • Louis C.K.’s three noms (acting and writing for Louie, writing for his stand-up special Hilarious) (Read my interview with Louis C.K. here.)
  • Tina Fey for hosting SNL
  • The writers of “The Real Women of SNL,” (the brilliant spoof of the Real Housewives of New Jersey reunion) the sketch that opened the prime-time Women of SNL special
  • Dexter for Best Drama and Julia Stiles for Best Guest Actress in a Drama
  • Game of Thrones, which I wasn’t blown away by (although it shows a lot of potential and I look forward to next season) but I like that HBO finally got around to producing a genre series and it performed well
  • Mariska Hargitay for SVU as this was her last full season
  • Walton Goggins for Justified and Andre Braugher for Men of a Certain Age, two surprising yet deserving supporting nods (although I wish Men of a Certain Age got more Emmy love, it’s a great show).
  • Parks and Rec for Best Comedy Series
  • Cara Buono, Robert Morse and Randee Heller (Miss Blankenship!) for Mad Men
  • Matthew Weiner’s script for Mad Men, “The Suitcase,” a brilliant episode that captures everything that’s special about the series (Don and Peggy’s relationship, Don’s secretive past, Peggy’s career ambition, the ensemble of the writers’ bullpen in the agency, an ad campaign from assignment to delivery, John Slattery as drunken, comic relief and the tying in of a historical element with the Cassius Clay fight.).
